Amarillo Police are working to crack down on drunk driving during spring break this year.
According to the Amarillo Police Department, beginning on Friday, March 9th, officers will be out in full force to crack down on drunk driving in Amarillo as part of APD's "Plan While You Can" campaign. Thanks to a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation, APD is planning to compensate extra patrol officers to concentrate enforcement on drunk driving, speeding and seatbelt violators.
The campaign is an annual occurrence in Texas, as police departments look to crack down on impaired driving. Officials say that those who violate the laws could face monetary penalties, jail time and loss of a driver's license. A drunk driving offense could also harm a person's job potential, officers say.
If you believe that you will not be sober enough to drive, you are advised to consider a variety of options. Among these options are:
•Designating a sober driver.
•Contacting a cab or ride-share service.
•Using mass transit.
•Spending the night
The extra enforcement will run for seven days, through Monday, March 19th.
