Texans now know what to expect from Senator Ted Cruz's re-election bid in 2018.
This week, Cruz unveiled the theme of his campaign as he seeks re-election to the U.S. Senate. Cruz will be running under the slogan "Tough as Texas," as prepares to face El Paso Democrat Beto O'Rourke in November. Cruz announced the slogan Monday with a commercial that drew heavily on themes of rescuers following the destruction in South Texas that was caused by Hurricane Harvey.
A commercial released Monday shows clips of Texans rescuing those stranded in Hurricane Harvey, as well as photos of Texas flags and Cruz campaigning across the Texas. The commercial ends with the slogan "Tough as Texas" as Cruz announces to a crowd "God bless Texas."
Cruz was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2012, defeating former State Senator Paul Sadler in the November general election, after topping Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst in a Republican primary contest. Cruz also ran for president in 2016, placing second in the Republican primary to New York businessman, an eventual winner, Donald Trump. In that race, Cruz ran under the slogan, "reigniting the promise of America."
