The Democratic nominee for Texas' U.S. Senate seat says that while he is awaiting the final results from special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into the 2016 election, he would support impeachment of President Donald Trump today.
Beto O'Rourke, an El Paso Democrat who is running to unseat Republican Ted Cruz in November, told Lubbock's KFYO on Monday that he is awaiting the results of the investigation by Mueller but would support impeachment in the U.S. House today.
"The answer is yes. I have seen an attempt...to collude with a foreign government in our national election," O'Rourke said in the interview. "I don't think that President Trump has the fitness or the competence or judgement to be in that position. But the impeachment, as I understand it, is tantamount to an indictment and says that the Senate should decide this. So, as a prospective senator, we must await all the facts....forthcoming from the Bob Mueller investigation."
O'Rourke is a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, representing the district that includes El Paso. O'Rourke, a businessman, defeated two opponents in the March Democratic primary and will face the Republican, Cruz, in November. The nominees of other parties have yet to be announced.
