Animal Shelter Sees 6 Percent Euthanasia Increase in 2017

Amarillo Animal Management & Welfare released information this week, showing intake numbers and total information comparing 2016 to 2017.

According to the information shown in the graphs, most numbers were down for the Animal Shelter in 2017. Total intake at the shelter fell about 2 percent in 2017 and the number of animals surrendered dropped about 6 percent.

Unfortunately, the number of reclaimed animals and adopted animals dropped at the shelter. The number of reclaimed animals dropped 27 percent and the number of adopted animals dropped 16 percent at the shelter from the 2016 numbers available.

The number of dogs and cats euthanized at the Animal Shelter in 2017 was up about 19 percent from the 2016 numbers. After adjusted numbers (total minus wild animals), the total percentage of animals euthanized stood at 33 percent in 2017, up from 27 percent in 2016.

After releasing the numbers, Animal Management & Welfare issued a statement calling for new solutions to animal-related issues in Amarillo by working with the Amarillo-Panhandle Humane Society.

"For our community to make any positive movement, we need support for the progressive recommendations that will come from both Amarillo Animal Management & Welfare and the Amarillo-Panhandle Humane Society over the coming months," AAM&W posted online.
