Controversial Local Billboard to be Removed

A local billboard aimed at "liberals" in the area will be removed.

According to the Fort Worth Star Telegram, a billboard near Vega telling "liberals" to leave Texas will be taken down. Randy Burkett, owner of Burkett Outdoor Advertising and owner of the billboard, told the outlet that the person who rented the space has decided to take down the billboard.

"I was shocked that it traveled that fast," Burkett said. "I believe in free speech, but this country is divided enough as it is. I've spoken with the client, and he's agreed that it should come down. We'll be reimbursing him."

The newspaper also reported that Burkett plans to replace the ad with a billboard for the Big Texan Steak Ranch or the Amarillo Convention and Visitors' Council.

A photo of the billboard went viral earlier this week and has appeared in outlets nationwide, including on Fox News. Opponents of the billboard have launched a GoFundMe to erect a rival billboard, although it is not clear whether that plan will be abandoned now that the first billboard is being removed.
