Piece of USS Arizona Donated to Local War Memorial

A piece of the USS Arizona ship, which sunk during the attack on Pearl Harbor, has been donated for display at the Texas Panhandle War Memorial.

This week, it was announced that an 800-pound piece of the USS Arizona will be donated for display at the local war memorial. The piece will include a steel plate and part of the ship's wooden deck. Judge Ernie Houdashell, of Randall County, was responsible for helping coordinate the donation.

Judge Richard Herman, a local veteran, state representative for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1475 and former VFW Post commander, called the donation "outstanding for the community."

"It's a great honor to receive such a historical piece of history in the Panhandle of Texas that symbolizes the dedication, and resolve of the American fighting man to keep our great country protected from evil and to be forever free," Herman said.

The piece is expected to be delivered to Amarillo by the United Parcel Service on June 30th. UPS is donating the cost of delivery.
