AFD Asks Residents to Skip Purchasing Fireworks, Attend Displays Instead

The Amarillo Fire Department is asking residents to refrain from purchasing fireworks this year and instead consider going to see a fireworks display in downtown Amarillo.

According to the Amarillo FD, residents are being encouraged to consider skipping the purchase of fireworks this year. Officials say that burn bans in the area will limit the ability to use the fireworks and possession of fireworks could lead to the charge of a Class C Misdemeanor and up to a $2,000 fine. Officials also cite that sparklers 25 percent of all fireworks-related emergency room visits as another reason to skip the purchase.

Instead of purchasing fireworks, residents are being encouraged by the Amarillo Fire Department and municipal officials to attend the downtown Route 66 Celebration this Saturday. The event, presented by the Amarillo Globe-News, the City of Amarillo and Happy State Bank, will feature a choreographed fireworks display.

If you have fireworks that you would like to dispose of for free, you may be eligible for the Amarillo Fire Department's Fireworks Amnesty program. For information on the program, please call 806-378-9092.
