Using Prop Dollars to Match, City to Seek Grant

The City of Amarillo is planning to seek a grant this week that, if won, would be backed by proposition dollars.

According to the City of Amarillo, the Amarillo City Council will consider approving the submission of an application for a federal grant on Tuesday night. The application would seek the BUILD Discretionary Grant to earn funds for improvements along Polk Street and Sixth Avenue. The City of Amarillo is reportedly planning to offer $3.53 million in matching funds for the grant, which were approved by voters in the Proposition 1 election in 2016. The matching funds come from an item meant for Polk Street improvements, although it is unclear whether Sixth Avenue improvements were also intended under the $5.58 million proposition item.

If approved, the grant would bring around $14 million from federal funds to complete the improvement projects.

Additionally, on Tuesday, Councilmembers will also consider submission of a Block Grant Program plan to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Mayor Ginger Nelson and Councilmember Elaine Hays are expected to be absent from the meeting, due to a convention in Kansas City. If a quorum cannot be achieved for Tuesday, then the items on the agenda will be postponed to a later meeting.

The Amarillo City Council will meet on Tuesday, July 10th at 5pm in the Council Chambers of Amarillo City Hall (509 Southeast 7th Avenue).
