Texas Tech Chancellor Announces Retirement

Texas Tech University System chancellor Robert Duncan has announced his retirement, due at the end of the month.

According to the Texas Scorecard, Duncan sent an email to university staff over the weekend. In the email, Duncan announced his retirement, reflecting on his years of tenure at the school.

"Serving the System as Chancellor has been the honor of a lifetime and the highlight of my professional career," Duncan said. "This position, and working alongside each of you, is an experience for which I am forever grateful. The growth and progress of the System and our four institutions over the past four years are undeniable and will make a difference in our communities, state and nation for years to come. We have so much to be proud of."

The retirement announcement was made just days after the Texas Tech Board of Regents' most recent meeting. During the meeting, regents discussed administration and finance of the school system. According to the Texas Scorecard, the retirement came amid rumors of funds misappropriation under Duncan. The rumors are being denied by university officials.

Following the announcement, the Amarillo City Council issued a statement praising Duncan and vowing to continue with the Texas Tech Veterinary School initiative started under Duncan.

"His work to establish the future Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine in Amarillo will benefit students and ag industry partners across the entire state of Texas," Councilmembers said. "Raising $90 million in gifts, including a signed commitment from the Amarillo Economic Development Corporation, Texas Tech University’s vision coupled with the generosity of West Texans will meet the needs of rural America."

It is not yet clear when an interim chancellor or search process for a permanent replacement will begin.
