Senator Ted Cruz released a statement this week, calling for full enforcement of all U.S. sanctions against Iran.
According to Senator Cruz's office, Cruz issued a statement this week praising the Trump Administration's announcement that it would be reinforcing sanctions against Iran that were previously lifted under a 2015 agreement. The announcement drew both criticism and praise from pundits and politicians.
"I am pleased that today President Trump re-imposed the first wave of sanctions that were lifted by the Obama nuclear deal," Cruz said in his statement. "The deal was designed to allow the Ayatollahs to cheat while flooding them with billions to be used for terrorism and repression. I have long called for withdrawing from this dysfunctional deal and targeting the regime with the sanctions surrendered by the Obama administration. The protests intensifying across Iran right now show us yet again that the Iranian people yearn to throw off the yoke of an oppressive regime. America must do everything possible to support them, including fully enforcing all American sanctions, and I call upon our allies across the world to do the same."
In a tweet, President Donald Trump said that the sanctions would be the "most biting" ever imposed and that he is seeking world peace.
"The Iran sanctions have officially been cast," Trump said. "These are the most biting sanctions ever imposed, and in November they ratchet up to yet another level. Anyone doing business with Iran will NOT be doing business with the United States. I am asking for WORLD PEACE, nothing less!"
