Former El Paso U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke has dropped his bid for the Democratic nomination for president in 2020.
O’Rourke announced in a blog post on Friday that he has decided to end his bid for president, saying “it is clear to me now that this campaign does not have the means to move forward successfully.” O’Rourke went on to say that he plans to help the Democratic nominee for president campaign against incumbent Republican Donald Trump.
With fanfare, O’Rourke entered the presidential race earlier this year, with some polls showing him directly behind then-front runner Joe Biden in support. However, after several disappointing debate performances, O’Rourke’s support began to slip.
The departure by O’Rourke leaves seventeen candidates vying for the Democratic nomination.
