Amid the partisan divide that has been crippling Washington over the past few years, one local congressional candidate is hoping to bring “balance” to Capitol.

Wichita Falls resident Kevin McInturff is running in the Republican primary to replace outgoing U.S. Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-Clarendon). A self-described “moderate Republican,” McInturff says his decades of experience working with non-profits and a career spent “helping people” can help bring unity and balance to Washington.

“My career has been spent in areas helping people,” McInturff said. “I think it gives me more of a compassionate viewpoint.”

The Republican contender says the gridlock that has plagued Washington can relieved by bringing “balance” to the table. McInturff says he would do that by putting away the partisan labels and focusing on policies meant solely to help the American people and the people of the 13th District.

“Both parties bring things to the table that need to be brought,” McInturff said. “Each policy I would advocate would be with an understanding of our human condition.”

On the issue of immigration, McInturff says he believes it needs to be addressed, calling it a “mistake” to ignore the issue. McInturff believes that while border security should be a priority of Congress, the issue should also be approached with a viewpoint of compassion.

Addressing one of the hottest topics on the minds of voters, McInturff says he supports the Second Amendment and the ownership of handguns, but he opposes the sale of new assault weapons. The Republican candidate said he “might be” inclined to support a ban on assault weapons, but would not support a buy back program.

“People have a right to bear arms and protect themselves, but I don’t know if we need military weapons out there,” McInturff said.

Finally, on the issue of impeachment, McInturff says he would not vote to impeach President Trump today if he were a member of the House, calling the current proceedings a “battle for political dominance.”

“The fallout from this event is creating such division in this country that I’m not sure we are ever going to heal from it,” McInturff said.

McInturff is currently seeking the Republican nomination for the U.S. House District 13 seat along with a crowded field that includes Jamie Culley, Elaine Hays, Richard Herman, Josh Winegarner, Vance Snider, Chris Ekstrom, and Monique Worthy.
