At a time when well over half of the American public disapproves of Congress, one congressional hopeful is hoping to be the voice for those who feel “unrepresented” in Washington.
Greg Sagan is running for the Democratic nomination to replace U.S. Rep. Mac Thornberry in 2020. His name has already appeared on the ballot once in a congressional race, as he received about 17 percent of the vote in his challenge to Thornberry in 2018. This year, the Democratic candidate is back with a mission to bring “science, facts, and reason” back to the public dialogue. Sagan says that a large number of residents in the 13th District feel unrepresented, and he want to change that by taking his experience and credentials to work for them.
On the issues, Sagan says he plans to focus his first term in Washington on issues that matter to the Texas Panhandle and the 13th District, such as agriculture, water, immigration, and education. Digging into the specifics on his issues, Sagan says he supports Medicare for All, but believes the issue is being approached the wrong way by politicians who are pushing the proposal.
“There are sound economic reasons that Medicare for All will be a saver,” Sagan says. “We need to start talking about it from an economic standpoint.”
Regarding farmers and ranchers, Sagan feels that this community has been hit the hardest by tariffs. The Democrat says he wants to work to make sure farmers and ranchers have a seat at the table in Washington.
Regarding the hot topic of gun violence, Sagan says he would support an assault weapons ban, but will not support policies meant to eliminate the Second Amendment, saying that the majority of handguns across the United States are being responsibly maintained by the American people.
“The vast majority of handguns in this country are…safe and held by responsible adults,” Sagan said.
Sagan is expected to face Gus Trujillo in the Democratic Party’s primary for the seat. A number of Republicans are also running.
