Canyon Mayor Gary Hinders has thrown his support behind one of the fifteen Republicans hoping to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-Clarendon).

On Friday, Hinders endorsed Amarillo City Councilwoman Elaine Hays for the Republican nomination to replace Thornberry. The endorsement was announced in a social media post by Hays’ campaign, marking the second elected official to back the financial planner-turned-politician, following the lead of former U.S. Rep. Dick Armey (R-Texas).

“It’s an honor to endorse Elaine Hays for U.S. Congress District 13,” Hinders said in the announcement. “In addition to her impeccable character, she brings experience as an elected official and a financial planner. She’s the right person to represent our conservative values in D.C.”

Hays’ announcement as a number of candidates have recently announced major endorsements. Businessman Chris Ekstrom recently picked up the support of U.S. Rep. Ron Wright, while Vance Snider announced the support of the SMART TD Transportation Union and Josh Winegarner has announced the support of several agriculture-related organizations.

Voters will decide this race on March 3, 2020.
