APD Investigating Christmas Eve Crash

Amarillo Police are investigating a recent crash that left one person dead and another injured.

On Tuesday, December 24th, officers were dispatched in the afternoon to a major 3-vehicle collision witnessed by a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper. Upon arriving on the scene, officers discovered a 2013 Peterbilt tractor pulling a 1998 Timpte grain hauler driven by a 65-year-old male from Hereford. The Peterbilt was westbound on East Amarillo Boulevard, turning south onto Ridgemere Street. It turned in front of a 2006 Lincoln four-door driven by Freddy Buckingham, 53 of Amarillo, that had been eastbound on East Amarillo Boulevard. The Lincoln struck the rear of the trailer, lost control, and spun into westbound traffic. The Lincoln then struck a westbound 2018 Chevrolet Camaro, driven by a 49-year-old female of Amarillo.

Buckingham was taken to a local hospital where he died of his injuries. The driver of the Camaro was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the semi was uninjured. Speed is a possible factor in the crash, as was no seatbelt for the Lincoln, according to APD.

Justice of the Peace Thomas Jones has ordered an autopsy. This incident is being investigated by the APD Traffic Investigation Squad.
