Senator John Cornyn has received his first Democratic challenger for the 2020 election cycle.
This week, Beaumont NAACP chairman Michael Cooper announced his intention to challenge Cornyn for his seat next year, according to the Beaumont Enterprise. Cooper previously ran for the Democratic nomination for Texas’ Lieutenant Governor seat, narrowly falling short to Mike Collier.
Cooper is the first Democrat to launch a challenge to Cornyn for 2020. Independent Dwayne Stovall has already announced his intention to challenge Cornyn, and several other Democrats, including Wendy Davis and Joaquin Castro have been openly considering bids for the office.
