Senator John Cornyn has received another challenger a little less than a year ahead of the first primaries of 2020.
This week, Democrat MJ Hegar announced her intention to challenge Cornyn, a Republican, in the 2020 Texas U.S. Senate race. Hegar joins Michael Cooper, Sema Hernandez and Adrian Ocegueda as candidates in the Democratic Party’s primary, according to the Texas Tribune.
Hegar is a U.S. Air Force veteran and former congressional candidate. Hegar gained national headlines last year after launching an unsuccessful bid to unseat Round Rock Republican John Carter in the race for a U.S. House seat there.
U.S. Congressman Joaquin Castro, a San Antonio Democrat and brother to presidential contender Julian Castro, is reportedly looking at jumping into the race, as well. Independent Dwayne Stovall is also running.
