Suspect Detained by Citizens Following Altercation on Ong Street

A physical altercation on South Ong Street led to one suspect being detained by two individuals before Amarillo Police officers arrived on scene Wednesday morning.

On the morning of April 17th, Amarillo Police officers were dispatched to the 1500 block of South Ong on the report of a fight. The victims, a 27-year-old male and a 27-year-old female, heard their neighbor’s dog barking and were awakened to find two males allegedly breaking into the neighbor’s vehicle. The victims confronted the suspects, one of whom fled on foot. The second suspect, Sir Alek Gonzalez, 17, allegedly pulled out a stolen knife and threatened the victims. The victims called the police and after a physical altercation, detained Gonzalez. APD reports that Gonzalez was found in possession of property taken during several auto burglaries in the area.

Gonzalez was placed under arrested for robbery and booked into the Potter County Detention Center.

Authorities say the victims in this case received minor injuries from the altercation. APD advises Amarillo residents against placing themselves in harm’s way to detain a suspect, but commends the victims for their actions.
