Texas Democrats appear to be leaning toward two presidential contenders, with several others on the bubble, less than a year away from the Democratic Party’s presidential primary in the state.
This week, a new poll from Emerson College showed former Vice President Joe Biden as the favorite in a hypothetical Texas Democratic primary matchup, leading the rest of the field with 23 percent. Former El Paso Congressman Beto O’Rourke followed Biden with 22 percent, with Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders trailing in third with 17 percent. Indiana mayor Pete Buttigieg and Massachusetts Democrat Elizabeth Warren rounded out the top five spots in the poll, earning 8 percent and 7 percent, respectively.
In head-to-head polling matchups with President Donald Trump, the poll found Biden leading Trump by one point, and Trump and O’Rourke tied at 50 percent a piece. Trump beat Sanders, Warren, Buttigieg and California Senator Kamala Harris in head-to-head matchups.
The margin of error on the poll was 5.3 percentage points, according to the polling report.
