Senator Ted Cruz has announced his support for Railroad Commissioner Ryan Sitton’s bid for re-election in 2020.
In an email to supporters on Monday, Cruz said he plans to support Sitton’s re-election campaign, casting the Republican incumbent as a visionary for the Commission, which regulates energy in the state.
“Ryan has supported me throughout my time in public office,” Cruz wrote in the email. “I support him too. He’s the kind of strong, conservative leader Texas needs right now.”
Sitton was first elected to the Railroad Commission in 2014, beating out Democrat Steve Brown, Libertarian Mark Miller, and Green Martina Salinas with 58 percent of the vote. Prior to winning election to the Texas Railroad Commission, Sitton also ran for the Texas House of Representatives in 2012.
At this time, it is unclear whether Sitton will face a primary challenger in March 2020.
