Chrysta Castaneda has declared her candidacy in the 2020 race for one of three seats on the Texas Railroad Commission.
Castaneda, a Dallas attorney, launched her bid this week. The Democrat’s entry into the race makes her the second Democrat to launch a bid against Sitton in 2020, behind Kelly Stone. The race is high profile, as it will be the marquee statewide contest for candidates looking to take a job in Austin.
Sitton was first elected to the Railroad Commission in 2014, having won 58 percent of the vote against Democrat Steve Brown’s 36 percent in that race. Republicans also won the races for Railroad Commission seats in Texas in 2016 and 2018, receiving no less than 53 percent of the vote.
Candidates can begin filing for spots on the ballot in November.
