When voters head to the polls beginning next week, they will see a number of Libertarian candidates on the ballot, seeking offices at the federal and statewide level.
In federal races, Dr. Jo Jorgensen and Spike Cohen are leading the Libertarian ticket as the party’s nominees for President and Vice President of the United States. Also on the federal LP ticket, for United States Senate, Kerry McKennon, a Panhandle native, will be the party’s candidate. McKennon is well-known to Texas voters as the party’s 2018 nominee for lieutenant governor, a campaign which saw him earn the support of over 183,000 Texans.
Panhandle voters will also see Jack B. Westbrook, an Amarillo retiree, on the ballot against Ronny Jackson and Gus Trujillo in the race to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-Clarendon).
For statewide contests, the party has also put up a slate of contenders. For Railroad Commissioner, Matt Sterett will face off with Republican Jim Wright and Democrat Chrysta Castaneda in the race to replace outgoing incumbent Ryan Sitton. For the Texas Supreme Court, Mark Ash, William Strange, and Tom Oxford will be on the ballot for the party, seeking Supreme Court seats 1, 7, and 8, respectively. Ash is perhaps one of the highest-profile candidates for the LP ticket in Texas this year, having won over 1.6 million votes for the party in his last appearance on the ballot, when he sought a seat on the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals in 2018.
Early voting in these contests begins October 13. Election Day is November 3.
