Texas A&M University President Dr. Michael Young will retire from his position on December 31st, according to announcement from the University this week.

According to a letter released by Young on Tuesday, he will step down from his position on December 31st, having already tendered his resignation to Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp. Young said after reflecting, he has decided to become a full-time faculty member for the Bush School of Government and Public Service and the School of Law, leading to his departure from leading the University.

“Thank you for the incredible opportunity to serve as your 25th President,” Young wrote. “As this great university goes forward, please take care of each other, Aggies. Commit to the success of each other in heart and action — the institution and Aggies will thrive as they always have.”

Sharp has recommended Dr. John Junkins, distinguished professor of aerospace engineering, to become the new interim president for the University. Reports have also confirmed the search is underway to select who will succeed Young as the president of Texas A&M University.
