Place 1 Amarillo City Councilwoman Elaine Hays is not seeking re-election in 2021.

On Thursday, Hays announced that she would not seek another term in office. In a statement, Hays called her opportunity to serve on the City Council “an honor,” but said her time of service has come to an end.

“It has been an absolute honor to serve the people of Amarillo. Much has been accomplished by this council, and I am proud to have played a role during this important time of growth for our city,” Hays said. “I am a firm believer that there is a season of service, and I believe my season as a councilmember has been completed.”

Hays was first elected to the Amarillo City Council in 2017, ousting then-incumbent Elisha L. Demerson. She won re-election in 2019, fending off a challenge from Hayden Pedigo, Richard Herman, and Jay Kirkman. However, Hays did launch an unsuccessful bid for Congress in 2020, earning around 8 percent of the vote in the Republican primary.

No candidates have announced candidacy for Hays’ seat at the time of this writing.

Election Day is May 1, 2021.
