City of Amarillo Closes Facilities in Response to COVID-19

Several municipal facilities have been temporarily closed as the Amarillo area grapples with the COVID-19 outbreak.

According to the City of Amarillo, beginning today, the Amarillo Civic Center Complex, Warford Activity Center, Amarillo Municipal Court, Amarillo Public Library, Amarillo Police Department lobby, Simms Municipal Building, Utility Billing department, municipal golf courses, the Amarillo Zoo, and the Amarillo Tennis Center will be closed to the public. Meanwhile, several other departments are now conducting limited services or services online or by phone.

In a statement, city manager Jared Miller said this response to COVID-19 is not a shutdown, but rather a modification of business practices.

“This isn’t a shut down,” Miller said. “We are modifying our business practices to ensure we can continue to provide all of the necessary services for our community while mitigating the spread of coronavirus.”
