Hegar and West Set to Face Off in Democrat Runoff for Senate

MJ Hegar and Royce West have clinched their spots for the May 26 runoff to find out which Democrat will face incumbent Sen. John Cornyn in November.

Results on Tuesday night have an indication that Hegar would advance to the runoff, aided by strong support in central Texas where she had previously run for Congress. However, her runoff opponent had not yet been decided, with State Sen. Royce West, Houston City Councilwoman Amanda Edwards and Jolt founder Cristina Tzintzún Ramirez all possibly in contention.

However, West opened up a small lead in the early hours of Wednesday morning that held, with outlets reporting Tzintzún Ramirez had conceded to the longtime state lawmaker.

The result sets up a particularly interesting runoff, with both candidates from the Dallas and Austin areas represented.

On the Republican side, hopes of a potential runoff were thwarted by a strong showing from Cornyn on Tuesday night. The race was called early as Cornyn pulled in 76 percent versus 12 percent for his closest competitor, Dwayne Stovall.

The winner of the Democratic runoff will meet Cornyn and the Libertarian nominee in November.
