Air Force veteran MJ Hegar is now the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in Texas.
On Tuesday night, Hegar won the Democratic Party’s U.S. Senate primary runoff over State Sen. Royce West. In a relatively close election, Hegar beat West, winning 52 percent of the vote. In local results, Hegar carried both Potter and Randall Counties in the Amarillo-area by wide margins.
The victory propels Hegar to the November general election to meet Republican incumbent U.S. Sen. John Cornyn. Libertarian delegates are also set to choose their nominee for the race in the coming weeks.
In addition to Hegar, Democratic voters also gave the nod to Chrysta Castañeda to be the party’s nominee for Railroad Commissioner on Tuesday. Castañeda won 62 percent of the vote against former State Rep. Roberto R. “Beto” Alonzo, and will now advance to the general election to face Republican Jim Wright.
