The Seventh Court of Appeals, Place 4 race is headed into overtime.
On Wednesday, it was announced that a new election has been ordered in the contest after it was discovered that voters in Collingsworth and Cochran Counties were unable to cast ballots in the 46-county contest. In initial results, Amarillo attorney Steven Denny defeated incumbent Larry Doss in the Republican primary for the seat, but those results have been voided and a new election has been ordered.
“I will continue to work to ensure that every voter gets an opportunity to be heard at the ballot box,” Doss said in a statement. “Thank you for all of your prayers and support during this time! I look forward to working with you as election day nears!”
Denny also provided a statement to the Amarillo Pioneer, saying that he is weighing his options as an appeal is possible.
“We are disappointed in the ruling but understand the court's reasoning,” Denny said. “The Election Code allows an appeal from the ruling and we are carefully weighing our options at this point.”
Denny also added that as a Republican party function, he was declared the winner of the initial primary.
According to Doss’ campaign, if the new election does take place, it is scheduled for July 14. The winner of the Republican primary will not face a challenger in November.
