Republican U.S. House candidate Ronny Jackson got another boost from President Donald Trump on Monday night, when the President dialed in to a tele-town hall hosted by the Jackson campaign.
During the call, Trump promoted Jackson as the best candidate in the U.S. House District 13 race, saying Jackson is “a talented doctor and a great admiral.”
“He’s the kind of person we need in Congress and in Washington,” Trump said of Jackson during the call. “…He will be a special, special congressman and he will never let you down.”
The call from Trump marks yet another push by the President in support of Jackson. Trump endorsed Jackson, a retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral and former White House physician, in a Tweet in February, and has since tweeted several times since then in support of Jackson’s campaign for Congress. President Trump’s sons, Eric and Don, have also gotten involved, tweeting supportive messages for Jackson.
Prior to Monday night’s town hall, the Texas Democratic Party issued a statement blasting Trump for taking part in the call.
“Today’s political stunt can’t spin the devastating toll that Trump’s failed coronavirus response has taken on essential workers across the panhandle, who are facing spiking COVID-19 cases and unemployment. Texans see right through this cheap ploy. That’s why come November, we’ll reject Trump at the ballot box,” Texas Democratic Party communications director Abhi Rahman said in a statement.
In addition to Jackson, the Texas Tribune reported Trump also made a supportive call to voters in Texas’ 23rd Congressional District on Monday for Tony Gonzales, who is seeking the Republican nomination for that seat against Air Force veteran Raul Reyes.
Voters in Texas’ 13th District will decide this election between Jackson and former lobbyist Josh Winegarner today.
