The current Amarillo City Council is hoping to pass a set of ballot propositions unlike anything we have ever seen on an Amarillo ballot. It’s time for voters to spring into action.

In November, voters will decide three distinctly bad ballot propositions placed on the ballot by the Amarillo City Council. The first ballot proposition would issue $275 million in debt for the Amarillo Civic Center Complex and other downtown projects, while the second and third propositions will impact the City Council’s term length and meeting calendar, respectively.

Since these items have been placed on the ballot, the establishment spin machine has already come out in force, trying to claim how these propositions are actually good for Amarillo voters or why voters should trust the elected officials to do the right thing on these propositions, despite a track record of broken promises.

I have been impressed to see voters actively asking questions and demanding answers on these expensive and dangerous propositions. I just hope that voters continue this kind of relentless questioning of our city officials during this election and beyond.

Citizens always deserve answers from their elected officials, even as the room of public discourse is sometimes filled with the deafening sounds of partisan spin from the City Council, their backers, and the government spin doctors who do their bidding. In the face of opposition, it is always important to keep questioning authority and to keep holding elected officials accountable.

Kudos to Amarillo voters. Keep up the good work and hold this City Council responsible for their propositions at the ballot box this November.
