Democrats are planning to make a major investment in the Lone Star State in 2020, with a national organization now committing at least $1 million to Air Force veteran and Democratic U.S. Senate nominee MJ Hegar’s bid to unseat Republican U.S. Sen. John Cornyn.

According to Politico, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee announced its plans to invest in Hegar’s general election campaign this week. The expenditures are expected to go toward TV spots and polling, among other campaign related expenses.

Hegar is the newly-minted U.S. Senate nominee for the Democratic Party in Texas, after she won her runoff election against State Sen. Royce West last month. With Hegar now set for the general election, Democrats are hoping the former congressional candidate can pick up where Beto O’Rourke left off in 2018, by generating enthusiasm in the high-profile race.

In recent polls, Cornyn is still holding a sizable lead over Hegar. A Quinnipiac Poll released last month had Cornyn leading Hegar by 9 points, while another poll released today by Morning Consult has Cornyn leading by 6 points.
