A brand new poll has the 2020 presidential race as a virtual tie in the Lone Star State.
According to a poll released this week by The Dallas Morning News and The University of Texas at Tyler, Republican President Donald Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden are tied at 43 percent each in Texas. The poll, which has a margin of error of +/-2.85, sampled 1,169 prospective voters. 5 percent of voters said they would vote for someone else, although leading candidates for both the Libertarian and Green presidential nominations, which will field candidates on the presidential ballot, were not named in the poll.
The poll also showed Republican U.S. Sen. John Cornyn leading both of the Democrats currently involved in their party’s U.S. Senate runoff. Cornyn leads MJ Hegar, 37 percent to 24 percent, and State Sen. Royce West, 35 percent to 24 percent.
According to FiveThirtyEight, this is the third poll in the past month to show a potential close race in Texas. An April poll by YouGov had Trump leading Biden by 5 points, while a Public Policy Polling poll had Biden up by 1 point. The website currently assigns a pollster rating of B/C to University of Texas at Tyler.
