In a special election to replace outgoing State Sen. Pat Fallon (R-Prosper) in Senate District 30, State Rep. Drew Springer and Dallas salon owner Shelley Luther are among the top candidates vying for the seat.
After Fallon tendered his resignation from the State Senate, effective January 4, six candidates threw their names into the hat in hopes of winning election in the solid Republican district. Filing for the ballot alongside Springer and Luther are Republican Craig Carter, Republican Andy Hopper, Democrat Jacob Minter, and Republican Chris Watts, the mayor of Denton.
Perhaps the most recognizable candidate in the race is Luther, who made headlines when she was arrested earlier this year after refusing to close her small business in defiance of government orders. Luther’s actions made her an icon among activists opposing the shutdowns of small businesses across Texas during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Election Day is September 29. Early voting begins September 14.
