Salon owner Shelley Luther and State Rep. Drew Springer have advanced to a runoff in the race to replace resigned State Sen. Pat Fallon in Senate District 30.

The district, which includes Wichita Falls, Denton, and areas in North Texas, advanced Luther and Springer to a runoff as the top two candidates in the race on Tuesday night, amid an expensive first round of voting. While the margin was tight for most of the night regarding who would make the runoff, Luther secured her spot early, with Springer later pulling way from Democrat Jacob Minter to claim his place on the runoff ballot.

Luther pulled in just over 32 percent of the vote, while Springer claimed just under 32 percent, followed by Minter at 21 percent. All other candidates, including Denton Mayor Chris Watts, finished in the single digits.

Gov. Greg Abbott will now be tasked with setting the date for the runoff between the two candidates.
