U.S. Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-Amarillo) urged his colleagues to oppose new efforts to impeachment President Donald J. Trump during a House debate on Wednesday.

Jackson, who took office earlier this month after his successful run to represent West Texas in the House last year, spoke on the floor after being recognized by Rep. Jim Jordan to speak for the Republican delegation in the House for one minute. In his remarks, Jackson called for Congress to encourage unity by focusing on key issues facing the country instead of pushing forward with what Republicans have viewed as a partisan-motivated impeachment attempt.

The full remarks by Jackson were as follows:

“Let me be clear, what happened last week was a stain on our nation and the criminals and rioters responsible should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. It is clear now more than ever that our country needs to come together. And Congress — this Congress — needs to lead by example and begin the process of healing the deep division that exists among us as Americans. The articles before us today will not accomplish that. In fact, the sham articles of impeachment will only serve to further fan the flames of unrest and to appease the radical left’s appetite for division. We should be focusing on restoring communities devastated by lock downs, working on America’s vaccine roll out, aiding a bipartisan investigation into these attacks, and ensuring election integrity — not impeaching a President who has promised a peaceful transition and who has less than seven days left in office. It is time to focus on the unprecedented challenges we face and it’s time to focus on unity. For these reasons, I urge my colleagues to oppose these articles of impeachment.

Shortly after Jackson spoke, U.S. Rep. Jodey Arrington (R-Lubbock) also spoke against the articles of impeachment. In Arrington’s remarks, he called on his colleagues to focus on issues facing the country and to move past the election.

“This week’s attack on the U.S. Capitol was completely unacceptable and the people involved should be met with swift accountability. The President didn’t incite a riot. The President didn’t lead an insurrection and there are no high crimes and misdemeanor requisite of an impeachment. I’m not saying the President didn’t exercise poor judgement, but to criminalize political speech by blaming lawless acts on the President’s rhetoric is wrong, Madame Speaker, and a very dangerous precedent. The criminals who stormed the Capitol that day acted on their own volition. They’re responsible for their actions. This is an important moment, Madame Speaker, for our nation. We have the opportunity to come together and do what’s right for our country. The votes are certified, President Trump has conceded. Let’s focus on the future and get back to the people’s business.
