West Texas A&M University student Zachary Unger is officially on the ballot, challenging an incumbent member of the Canyon City Commission.

On Friday, Unger filed his application to oppose Place 5 Commissioner Randy Ray in Canyon. Ray, Director of Broadcast Engineering and Associate Lecturer of Media Communication at West Texas A&M, was first elected to his seat in 2019.

While Unger is hoping to unseat an incumbent, the ballot filings through Friday also ensured at least one new face will appear on the City Commission. Kelsey Ward filed for the Place 4 seat on the Commission, which is currently held by Roger Remlinger. Remlinger did not file for re-election, giving Ward effectively a clear path to election barring the filing of any write-in candidates.

In addition, Mayor Gary Hinders and Commissioners Cody Jones and Paul R. Lyons filed for re-election in unopposed contests.

Election Day will be May 1.

This article has been updated to reflect Commissioner Randy Ray’s correct job title at West Texas A&M University.
