Voters in Potter County might have the opportunity to vote in a race this year, which usually passes by unknown.
Through Friday, interested candidates can file their applications to run for the Precinct 9 seat on the Panhandle Groundwater Conservation District Board of Directors, which includes most of Potter County. Incumbent F.G. “Butch” Collard is up for re-election, and those who are interested in filing for a spot on the ballot still have time to do so.
Created in 1955, the Panhandle Groundwater District’s primary goal is to “strive to develop, promote and implement water conservation, augmentation and management strategies to protect water resources for the benefit of the citizens, economy, and environment of the District.” Members of the nine-person board oversee operations of the District, which spans east all the way to Wheeler County. However, in most cases, voters in individual counties or areas within a county vote to elect one board member from their region, which is the case with the voters in Precinct 9.
According the District, interested candidates can file their applications in-person at the District office in White Deer to claim a spot on the ballot. A filing fee is not required to run and candidates need only to be registered voters within their precinct to run for the seat.
The filing deadline is Friday, February 12. Election Day is May 1.
