By Amarillo Pioneer Publisher’s Committee
Over the past month, our Publisher’s Committee has unveiled its endorsements for the May 1 election, recognizing candidates who have presented the right vision and qualifications to lead our city forward for the next few years. It is our Publisher’s Committee’s belief that the candidates recommended will be strong advocates for local taxpayers, responsible stewards of the taxpayers’ resources, and qualified and intelligent public servants with the best interests in mind for every neighborhood in our city.
Here is a recap of our Publisher’s Committee’s endorsements for May 1:
Michael Hunt’s business, non-profit, and education leadership experience, combined with his focus on delivering real results for Amarillo with a unifying message makes him the clear choice in this contest.
For City Council, Place 1: Hobert “Gunny” Brown, Jr.
Known for his successful take down of Propositions A and B in November, U.S. Marine Corps veteran and Purple Heart recipient Hobert “Gunny” Brown has shown his commitment to keeping taxes low and government small and accountable in Amarillo.
For City Council, Place 2: Jason Foglesong
San Jacinto resident Jason Foglesong’s experience as a conservative public educator and community volunteerism shows a servant’s heart that is unrivaled in this race for City Council.
For City Council, Place 3: Tom Scherlen
A father of two police officers and a longtime business executive in Amarillo, Tom Scherlen knows the meaning of community service. Scherlen’s focus on low taxes and calls for a full time councilmember are promising as he seeks to replace a bureaucratic loyalist on the City Council.

For Amarillo ISD Board of Trustees: Bennie D. Anderson, Doyle Corder, Louis P. Montaño
Polls will be open from 7am until 7pm on Saturday, May 1.
