Allen West has resigned his position as chairman of the Republican Party of Texas, setting the stage for what could be a statewide campaign of his own.
On Friday, it was reported that West tendered his resignation as party chairman, with plans to leave office after his successor is selected on July 11. In tendering his resignation, West told reporters at a news conference that he will “have to go to the Lord in prayer” regarding a statewide campaign after being asked to run by Texans.
Rumors have circulated for weeks that West may launch a campaign for Governor in 2022, joining what would be a primary field that would already include incumbent Greg Abbott, former State Sen. Don Huffines, and comedian Chad Prather. Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller is also rumored to be considering a bid for the job.
It is unclear who will run to succeed West in July. However, candidates still have plenty of time to announce their campaigns for the office.
