Gov. Greg Abbott has picked up another primary opponent for next year.

On Sunday, retiring Texas Republican Party chairman Allen West announced his campaign for Texas Governor. In his announcement campaign video, West said he decided to place his name on the ballot for the first time in a decade after witnessing the events of the country and Texas over the past few years.

“I’ve not been in elected political office for about a decade, but I can no longer sit on the sidelines and see what has happened in these United States of America...the place that I call home," West said.

With West’s entry into the race, Republican primary voters now have five challengers who are hoping to wrestle the Republican nomination away from Abbott in next year’s Governor’s race. In addition to West, former State Sen. Don Huffines, comedian Chad Prather, attorney Paul Belew, and veteran Kurt Schwab are also in the race.

The Republican primary for Governor is currently scheduled for March, but may be postponed until later in the year.
