Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts Glenn Hegar has announced his plans to seek re-election to the state’s top financial position next year.

Hegar announced his candidacy for re-election on Tuesday, setting up his campaign for a third term in office. In a press release, the incumbent Republican official touted his record in office, saying that under his watch, Texas has avoided the same financial fate as other troubled state governments.

“During the recent legislative session, I worked with legislators to make critical reforms to our state employee pension plan so that Texas avoids the fate of states like Illinois which is drowning under the burden of unfunded pension liabilities,” Hegar said.

Hegar was most recently re-elected to his job in 2018, defeating Democrat Joi Chevalier and Libertarian Ben Sanders in that year’s general election, winning 53 percent of the vote. Thus far, Hegar has drawn no challengers for his 2022 re-election bid.
