Next week, the Amarillo City Council vote on repealing a controversial debt issuance.
According to an agenda posted on Amarillo.gov for next week’s meeting, Council members will vote on withdrawing “authorization of the Notice of Intent to Issue Certificates of Obligation concerning the issuance of certificates of obligation not to exceed $35,000,000.” The notice of intent to issue the debt was approved on June 8, and was meant to pay for projects related to the establishment of a new city hall downtown.
After the item was approved in June, a citizen-led petition was launched to force the item to the November ballot. Organizers of the petition drive eventually turned in enough signatures to require the election to be held, but if this item is passed, it could mean the election may not take place in November.
In addition to this item, the Amarillo City Council will vote Tuesday on adopting guidelines and criteria for tax abatements within reinvestment zones in Amarillo. Such guidelines are required under state law and the most recently adopted set of guidelines expired this month, according to City officials, causing the need for new guidelines to be set. Additionally, the City Council will vote on nominating Cacique Foods, LLC to the Governor’s Office of Economic Development and Tourism through the Texas Economic Development Bank “for designation as a qualified business and enterprise project under the Texas Enterprise Zone Program.”
Tuesday’s meeting will begin at 1pm on Tuesday, August 24, in the Council Chambers of Amarillo City Hall (601 South Buchanan).
