It looks like Amarillo voters might be heading back to the polls in November.
According to an agenda posted by the City of Amarillo, during a special meeting of the City Council on Friday, Councilmembers will consider voting to send an item to the ballot requiring voters to ratify a tax increase for the upcoming fiscal year. The election, which is required under state law due to the size of the proposed increase, would ask voters whether the City Council’s proposed 24.48 percent tax increase for the year should be adopted.
Under the proposed tax increase, Amarillo residents with $100,000 homes would see the municipal portion of their taxes raised by over $60.
If the election is ordered, voters will decide the item on November 2.
For those who would like to participate in a public hearing on the tax increase before the election is ordered, they may participate at the City Council’s meeting Friday, August 13 at 1pm. The meeting will take place in the Council Chambers of City Hall (601 South Buchanan).
