Former State Sen. Don Huffines took aim at Republican Gov. Greg Abbott this week following a report by the Texas Tribune stating that over 200 illegal immigrants arrested in Texas will be released back into the state.
According to the report from the Texas Tribune, about 250 illegal immigrants arrested under Gov. Greg Abbott’s “catch and jail” border security policy will be released without being charged with crimes. A state district judge ordered the release after defense attorneys challenged the continued imprisonment of the immigrants.
In his statement, Huffines, who is challenge Abbott for the Republican nomination for Governor, blasted the incumbent, saying, “our state is being invaded and our governor is failing to defend Texans.”
“Texans deserve a secure border and leaders who keep their word. Greg Abbott has failed on both fronts and his continued refusal to combat this invasion of illegal aliens leaves Texans less safe,” Huffines said. “When I am governor, I will keep my promises to Texans and do whatever it takes to secure the border even if it means taking on the federal government. I’m not asking for permission.”
Huffines is set to face Abbott in the Republican primary for Governor next March. Also joining Huffines in challenging Abbott on the primary ballot are comedian Chad Prather, former Congressman Allen West, attorney Paul Belew, and veteran Kurt Schwab.
