Gus Trujillo, the Democratic nominee for the U.S. House of Representatives in Texas’ 13th Congressional District in 2020, will not be seeking election to the office next year.
Trujillo released a statement on Friday announcing that he would not be running for the U.S. House of Representatives in 2022. He previously ran for the office in 2018, defeating Greg Sagan and Timothy Gassaway in the Democratic primary for the seat, and received around 19 percent of the vote against Republican Ronny Jackson in the general election.
Instead of seeking the office for a second time, Trujillo said in his statement that he will be throwing his support behind Kathleen Brown, a Wichita Falls attorney who has already announced her candidacy for the Democratic nomination. His full statement is below:
I do not plan to run for Congress in 2022, but I will not rule out a possible campaign for office in the future. It is my hope that the leaders of our area who seek higher office in Washington will be well respected, wise, caring and most of all local people.
One of these good local people that I’ve been fortunate to know is Kathleen Brown from Wichita Falls. I met Kathleen early in her launch for congress this year and I was impressed by her background. Ms. Brown is an attorney who’s been operating her own practice for over 8 years. She has devoted her life to helping others seek justice and fair resolution in our court system. She has a great mind and, what I believe to be the most important aspect, a heart to serve our community.
I am confident that Kathleen Brown will be an outstanding Representative for all our people in the 13th District of Texas. Therefore, I am pleased to endorse Kathleen Brown for Congress in 2022.
Thus far, Jackson and Brown are the only two candidates to have declared for the 2022 election in Texas’ 13th Congressional District. Candidates have until December to announce their candidacies for the seat.
