Amarillo City Council is set to meet on Tuesday at 1:00 pm to discuss nearly $30 million in spending, increases in parking garage fees, and the creation of a Police Reserve Force, and more. The council will also hold a closed-door executive session at the end of the meeting to discuss Alex Fairly’s lawsuit against the city over the Civic Center project.
The bulk of the just over $30 million in spending items is a $28 million contract to Western Builders for the City Hall project. The remaining $2 million are mostly for various projects related to the airport, as well as an economic incentive package for Coast Packing Company - South. The council will also take up a number of zoning changes, including final approval of several passed by the council during their last meeting, as well as one new rezoning ordinance. Absent from the agenda is a follow up on a rezoning ordinance tabled during the previous meeting to rezone an empty lot currently zoned for apartments to allow a new and used auto dealership. Read our full story on that issue here.
The agenda also includes plans to increase parking garage fees to $11 per day or $4 per hour. The current rates are $7 per day or $2 per hour. The increase to $11 per day is even higher than an increase recommended by the Local Government Corporation Board of Directors, which had recommended an increase to $10 in August.
The council will also vote on creating a Police Reserve Force, allowing former Amarillo police to assist the Amarillo Police Department.
