Hobert “Gunny” Brown, a United States Marine Corps veteran, Purple Heart recipient, philanthropist, and conservative political activist, announced this week he will again run for Amarillo City Council.
In a statement posted to his Facebook page, Brown said that he has not yet made a firm decision on which place he will be running for, he stated that he does not intend on running against incumbent Cole Stanley or Tom Scherlen, who recently announced a bid for Place 3. While Brown is also currently leaving open the door to running for mayor, he has stated that prospect is “very unlikely.”
In his announcement, Brown stated that a priority of his would be to implement single-member districts for City Council. He also noted that this proposal “is just one part of the Gunny Plan.”
Brown is perhaps best known in political circles for his work on the campaign against the Proposition A Civic Center bond in 2020. Brown, who served as the founding treasurer of Save Amarillo PAC, used that experience to launch his campaign for City Council Place 1 in 2021. Brown earned second place in that three way open race, with Cole Stanley winning.
Since the 2021 council election, Brown has made a name for himself as a philanthropist, organizing events to benefit veterans and first responders. In addition to running for City Council in 2023, Brown has already announced a list of planned events for the year.
