Local businessman Tom Scherlen has filed his treasurer appointment paperwork to run for Place 3 on the Amarillo City Council next year.

Scherlen, the former CEO of Austin Hose and the current president of the Amarillo Senior Citizens Association Board of Directors, is running to replace City Councilman Eddy Sauer in 2023. Sauer has announced that he will not seek re-election next year.

In 2021, Scherlen sought election to Sauer’s seat on the City Council, winning 43 percent of the vote against the incumbent — the largest vote share for any challenger of the election cycle. In that election, Scherlen focused his campaign on issues like reducing taxes and increasing accessibility at City Hall.

Thus far, Scherlen is the only non-incumbent candidate to announce a bid for the City Council in 2023.

Candidates will begin officially filing to run for office next month.
