Potter County Republican Party Vice Chairman Mike Yazbek has announced his candidacy for a seat on the Amarillo College Board of Regents.

Yazbek, a self-employed licensed knife sharpener, told voters on Monday night at the High Plains Republican Women meeting that he will be running for the Amarillo College Board of Regents in May. Yazbek is the first candidate to launch their bid for one of three seats up for grabs on the governing board of the college this year.

According to Yazbek’s biography, he worked in the entertainment industry for over 40 years, as a concert promoter, disc jockey, and radio personality. Today, Yazbek operates a small knife sharpening operation and is one of a limited number of sharpeners licensed by the International Scissor Sharpeners Association. He is a graduate of Amarillo College and Texas State Technical College, and a veteran of the Texas Army National Guard.

The three seats up for grabs this year on the AC Board of Regents are held by Jay L. Barrett, Sally Jennings, and Michele Fortunato, who were all elected in 2017. None of the incumbents have declared whether they will seek re-election this year.

Voters will decide this election in May.
