Amazon warehouse worker Sherie Wood has filed to run for Amarillo City Council Place 2.

Wood announced her intention to run earlier this month with a Facebook post. In the post, she stated that she is "tired of seeing what's going on with our city and I'm sure everyone else is too." She further stated that she is "for change and definitely for the great people of our city of Amarillo" and that she feels it is "time to rejuvenate Amarillo rejuvenating the citizens."

Shortly after her post, Wood filed to run for Place 3. However, according to Amarillo City Secretary Stephanie Coggins, Wood chose to file with a petition in lieu of paying the $100 filing fee. Coggins told The Amarillo Pioneer that Wood's petition was rejected due to an insufficient number of valid signatures. Earlier today, Wood filed to run for Place 2 and paid the filing fee.

The incumbent for Place 2, Freda Powell, announced last week that she would be running for mayor, leaving the race for Place 2 open. So far, no other candidates have filed for Place 2, though insurance agent Don Tipps announced his candidacy earlier this month.

Wood's filing leaves Place 1 as the only seat with no filings. Incumbent Place 1 Councilman Cole Stanley has hinted he will run again, though he may choose to run for mayor if rumored mayoral candidate Alex Fairly does not run.

Meanwhile, the only candidate to have filed for Place 3, which is being vacated by Councilman Eddy Sauer, is retired businessman Tom Scherlen. Likewise, the only candidate to file for Place 4, which is being vacated by Councilman Howard Smith, is marine veteran and philanthropist Hobert "Gunny" Brown. However, former Justice of the Peace Richard Herman has teased he will be running for Place 4 on social media. Two candidates have filed to run for mayor, including the above-mentioned City Councilwoman Place 2 Freda Powell and social media influencer Tonya "Lady Butterscotch" Winston. Incumbent Mayor Ginger Nelson is not seeking reelection.

The filing deadline for candidates interested in running for city office is February 17th at 5:00 pm. The city government has stressed that applications must be received by the city by the deadline. Election Day is May 6th.
